If you’ve ever seen a Tesla motor, its compact size might surprise you. But don’t let that fool you—despite its small dimensions, it packs a powerful punch. It’s truly remarkable how much performance Tesla fits into such a small motor.
A standard Tesla motor measures just 9 inches (22.86 cm) in length and diameter. When combined with the inverter and gearbox in an all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup, the total length is only 21 inches (53.34 cm).
In rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Teslas, the motor sits over the rear axle. In contrast, all-wheel-drive (AWD) models place the front motor between the two front wheels.
Tesla currently offers five models, with more likely on the way. Each car features different motors based on the model and trim level. Read on to find out more!
Tesla’s Electric Motors
What makes these motors so impressive? Let’s explore that by asking another question.
Do Teslas have engines?
This question comes up quite often. The simple answer is: no! Teslas don’t have traditional engines.

Teslas run on electricity, not gasoline. They use electric motors powered by batteries. The motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy, turning the wheels and propelling the car forward. Instead of a loud engine roar, you hear a gentle hum from the motor.

Tesla Model S Motor
The Tesla Model S features motors that are lightweight, compact, and highly efficient, offering extended range and rapid acceleration. All-wheel drive is standard on the Model S Performance and 70D versions, and optional on the Model S 85.
The Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive system enhances traditional setups by placing one motor at the front and another at the rear, allowing independent torque distribution to each axle.

In 2021, Tesla introduced the Plaid upgrade for the Model S, which includes:
- Enhanced performance
- Redesigned interior
- Updated powertrain
- Improved suspension
Fun Fact:
Most Tesla owners are male. Statistics show that men own 84% of Model 3s, 71% of Model Xs, and 77% of Model S vehicles.
Tesla Model X Motor
The Tesla Model X is not just fast—it’s lightning fast. It comes with two electric motors that produce a combined 670 horsepower. The standard setup includes a 100-kWh battery, dual motors, all-wheel drive, and a single-speed transmission.
The Plaid version takes it up a notch with three electric motors generating a whopping 1,020 horsepower, delivering exhilarating performance.
Tesla Model Y Motor
The Tesla Model Y is one of the most efficient electric SUVs available. It features dual-motor all-wheel drive and comes in two trim levels: Standard and Long Range, offering 456 hp or 384 hp depending on the model.
Did You Know?
Tesla doesn’t just make electric cars; it also operates in energy production. In 2020, Tesla generated around $2 billion in revenue from its energy sector, and this area continues to grow.
Tesla Model 3 Motor
The Tesla Model 3 is an outstanding electric sedan, offering a range that surpasses many luxury electric cars. It comes in three variants.
With strong motors, quick acceleration, and excellent handling, the Model 3 delivers solid performance. It’s available in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. The AWD and Performance models feature dual motors, one at the front and one at the rear.
Fun Fact:
The Model 3 is Tesla’s best-selling electric vehicle worldwide. Since its launch in 2017, it has sold over one million units, becoming the first electric vehicle to reach this milestone in 2021.
